A program to help kids ride a bike.

Do you remember your first bike? Its color? The feelings of independence and freedom as you raced down the street and felt the wind in your hair?

Imagine having those memories taken away from you. It’s a sad reality for a lot of kids who are not able to ride a typical two-wheeled bike, due to physical limitations, challenges with balance or steering, or not feeling safe enough to ride comfortably.

An adaptive bike helps to make riding a bike possible for kids with disabilities. The only obstacle here is that these individually customized adaptive bikes are very expensive, and for many families, it is not something that is completely out of reach for them.

Mission

The mission of Special Olympics Pennsylvania is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes, and the community.

Donation Impact

In 2018 and 2019 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Nordic was the recipient of donations from the proceeds of the Hidden Valley Mountain Metric.

These donations have helped the snow sport athletes compete in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Winter Games, a 3-day event held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. In 2017, the monies helped purchase team jackets for the cross-country ski and snowshoe team of the Somerset County Chapter. Several pairs of new skis, snowshoes, and race equipment were also purchased. In 2018, the monies were used to host a snowshoe invitational at Seven Springs Mountain Resort's Golf Course, the same course used for the Winter Games. Athletes from nearby counties participated in the one day event.

While monetary donations have been extremely helpful for the Special Olympics Pennsylvania organization, the volunteerism from Hidden Valley's homeowners has been priceless.  The volunteers have provided essential help in running the events at both the Snowshoe Invitational and the Winter Games.
